🏈✏️ What an engaging mini escape room–style lesson by Dr. Ruthanna Lucas, our 4th grade teacher, and Ms. Tailor D’Adamo, our substitute teacher! The Mystery at the School Super Bowl Party combined math, problem-solving, and creative writing to spark curiosity and teamwork among our fourth graders.
Students solved math clues using the order of operations, collaborated to crack the mystery, and wrapped it all up with a fun “Finish the Story” writing prompt.
👏 Kudos to Dr. Lucas and Ms. D'Adamo for their dedication and ingenuity in making learning an enjoyable adventure here at Vienna Elementary School! #withJOY

⚠️Winter Weather Update from DCPS⚠️
A winter storm may impact our area this weekend (Jan 24-25, 2026). DCPS plans to open on a regular schedule on Monday, January 26, but we will monitor conditions closely and keep you informed of any changes.
❄️School Schedule - DCPS is scheduled to open for a normal school day on Monday, January 26.
❄️Weather Monitoring - If the storm moves in this weekend, we may need to close schools. Weather-related updates will be provided through the DCPS app, social media platforms, email, phone system, and website.
❄️Snow Days - DCPS has 2 more snow days built into our 2025-2026 school calendar. Maryland law requires us to use all built-in snow days before considering virtual instruction.
❄️Virtual Instruction - If the storm results in school closures beyond 2 days, we will switch to virtual instruction. Grades 1-12 will log into their devices to connect with teachers online. PK and K students will receive paper copies and can contact teachers for help.
❄️Preparation - Students with device agreements will bring devices home Friday; all other students and students in PK and K will receive paper assignments.
📅Possible Closure Plan:
❌Monday 1/26: If closed, no school
❌Tuesday 1/27: If closed, no school
💻Wednesday 1/28: If closed, virtual instruction begins
❌Thursday 1/29: Schools Closed for Staff Professional Development
❌Friday 1/30: Schools Closed for Change of Semester
We’re committed to being prepared and will keep you informed.

**ONE BOOK, ONE SCHOOL!**
Starting tonight, Monday, January 12, 2026, Vienna Elementary School will participate in a special school-wide community reading event. Every family will receive a copy of the book "Friendship According to Humphrey" and will be encouraged to read it together at home over the next few weeks. We invite you to make the time to participate in this meaningful activity.
Reading aloud at home is valuable because it helps prepare your child to become an effective reader and provides a fun, worthwhile family experience. With this program, we aim to build a Community of Readers within our school. Everyone—students, parents, teachers, and even administrative staff—will be reading along together.
In school, your child will be invited to answer daily trivia questions to encourage and reward attentive listening. You will soon find that your child takes pride in knowing and anticipating the story's details. In class, students will explore the book through activities and discussion. You will want to make sure your family keeps up so that your child can be included.
The Humphrey book will be sent home tonight, and students received a reading schedule on Friday to help you keep up at home. The Humphrey reading can count as their reading steps for the evening.
Thank you for your continued support!
Happy Reading, Reading, Reading, #withJOY!

After his first amazing experience with us in the fall, Humphrey the hamster is thrilled to return to Vienna Elementary School as we continue our One Book, One School tradition featuring the beloved Humphrey book series. Our next selection is Friendship According to Humphrey—and we can't wait to see who Humphrey befriends this time!
Each day, Humphrey will make a special visit to a different classroom, spending quality time with each class. Our Principal, Mrs. Price, will keep everyone in the loop with daily updates during the morning announcements, letting us know how each classroom visit went and what interesting discoveries Humphrey made along the way.
Additionally, there will be a fun trivia question every morning based on the chapter read the night before, offering students a chance to earn "HOUSE" bonus points!
Stay tuned for more details!
📚 Reading begins Monday, January 12, 2026.
Happy Reading, Reading, Reading #withJOY!

👥 Club F.E.A.R. (Face Everything and Rise) - Local mentors Mr. Ryshaun Taylor and Mr. Tre'Kwon Trador visit Vienna Elementary School each week during lunch to work with selected 4th and 5th-grade students. Their focus is on building empowerment, social skills, and self-confidence among our students.
We greatly appreciate Mr. Taylor and Mr. Trador's commitment to mentoring our Terrapins and making a positive impact on their lives.
Additionally, we would like to extend our gratitude to Mrs. Connar Winn and Mrs. Michelle Frost for organizing this valuable program for our students.
