Students from North Dorchester Middle School (NDMS) and Mace’s Lane Middle School (MLMS) recently had the unique opportunity to attend a rehearsal of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, an experience that provided invaluable insight into the professional world of music and enriched their own musical journeys.

The visit allowed Dorchester County’s young musicians—members of the NDMS Symphonic Band and MLMS band and choir—to witness firsthand the rehearsal process of one of America’s premier orchestras. Unlike attending a polished concert performance, observing the behind-the-scenes preparation offered students a rare glimpse into the dedication, discipline, and refinement required to achieve musical excellence. Seeing that professional musicians engage in the same rehearsal routines as our students reinforced their pride and motivated them to elevate their own practice. It showed them that excellence is a continuous journey.

During the rehearsal, students engaged deeply with the theme of “Earth Songs,” experiencing masterful compositions that evoke the sounds and emotions of nature. Highlights included:

Of a Spring Morning by Lili Boulanger, a lush soundscape capturing the essence of springtime

The Tears of Nature by Tan Dun, featuring percussion soloist Edouard Beyens, which recreated the dynamic and evolving sounds of the Earth

The Rite of Spring by Igor Stravinsky, renowned for its raw power, ancient folk influences, and harmonies

This immersive experience not only broadened students’ musical understanding but also inspired a renewed commitment to their ensembles as they prepared for the upcoming Jr. District Band Festival at Stephen Decatur High School held on March 19th, where they performed for a panel of professional judges.

Dorchester County Public Schools is proud to provide students with enriching opportunities that foster artistic growth, discipline, and a lifelong appreciation for the arts.
